Last week Christina Branch (Healthcare Science Technology Teacher; pictured third from left) and Brandi Terrell (Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security Teacher; Pictured first from  right) along with several other teachers from across the state, completed training for The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. CERT educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

Fritts Rated Top Female Freshman Fencer/

Miller Matches Career Best

The Centennial fencers competed Saturday in their first home meet of the season.   The women were once again led by 9th grader Maggie Fritts.   Her third place finish earned Fritts a medal as well as 40 points toward league standings.   She is now the top rated female freshman fencer in the Georgia High School Fencing League, an amazing feat for someone who took up the sport two months ago.

For the men, junior Simon Miller matched his career best with his second consecutive 9th place finish.   Miller continued his hot streak, earning points for the third consecutive tournament.  Teammates Kenneth Blackwell, Peter Wolff, and Duncan Hemauer advanced to the round of 32, acquitting themselves well against tough opponents.

Freshmen Joseph Dorfman, Daniel Sandfelder, and Nick Bray demonstrated the depth of the squad with 3 victories each in the preliminary pool bouts.   Fellow ninth grader Dean Bowler lost a nail-biter in his efforts to advance in the DE (direct elimination) bracket.

In the Women’s event, Fritts won 5 preliminary bouts earning her a fifth seed in the DE competition.   Olivia Katz continued to display great progress with two victories in her pool.

Centennial fencers and their families showed the league how to host a tournament, earning much praise from visiting schools and their coaches.   CHS will be the site for another GHSFL tournament on January 17.

The future firefighters were all suited up in protective gear and even had a lesson in crawling , without visibility, through a burning building to locate an injured victim.
