Centennial Fencing Continues Rise to the Top

The Centennial Knights hosted the first tournament of the new season for the Georgia High School Fencing League (GHSFL) on September 19th.  Ten schools were in attendance.  Centennial Coach Gene Gettler, in his 8th season with the Knights, is excited about the team’s prospects. Returning from last year are 17 experienced fencers, and also 11 new recruits have joined the team.

Out of 73 men and 50 women, five Knights finished in the top 16 and earned team points.  Junior Casey Archambault had an awesome 6th place finish, Sophomore Maggie Fritts was close behind at 9th, and Junior Captain Karla Chavez turned in a solid performance for the Lady Knights, placing 16th.  Sophomore Olivia Katz fenced well but just missed earning points at 22nd. Newcomer Sophomore Cursten Howard, fencing for less than one month, showed she will be a great addition to the squad, winning several key matches and placing 32nd.

On the men’s side, Senior Captain Simon Miller led with a 9th place finish.   Senior Captain Joshua Yao was close behind at 13th.   Just missing the top 16 but showing much improvement was Senior Captain Jackson Barnes at 24th. Super Sophomores Nick Bray (29th), Daniel Sandfelder (31st), Joshua Agri (32nd), and Duncan Hemauer (33rd) did well to finish in the top 40%. Newcomer Freshman Alex Campbell was impressive in his debut. The men’s team has a lot of depth and will hopefully earn more team points in future meets.

The Knights next fencing action takes place this Saturday, October 3rd at Alpharetta High School.

Mikaela Wiedmann Named AVCA
Player of the Week

Congrats to Mikaela Weidmann (pictured above center; left - Jessica Diaz; right - Losia Tomlinson) on her selection as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) PLAYER OF THE WEEK!! This is a great honor for Mikaela, as the AVCA only chooses one athlete in the state for the award.

Mikaela has been a standout this year for the Knights and a big reason for their stellar 26-9 record this year. Mikaela will continue her volleyball career at UNC-Greensboro next year and has accomplished a lot athletically on the court as well as academically off the court here at Centennial.

The Knights are in action this week with away matches at Alpharetta and Buford, but you can catch them at home next week as they take on Eastside and Mount Vernon Presbyterian as they prepare for the region tournament.

CHS Math Teacher Praised in UGA Publication

Thirty University of Georgia graduates have committed to teach in high-needs schools across the nation through the competitive Teach for America program....

Teach for America, part of the AmeriCorps national services network, recruits and develops college graduates and professionals who make a two-year commitment to teach in high-needs rural and urban schools across the country. Only 15 percent of this year's 44,000 applicants, with an average GPA of 3.4, were admitted to the program…

Zack Kroll of Roswell enlisted in Teach for America after he graduated in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in economics from the Terry College of Business.

"I really wanted to find something where I was making an impact-being positive and productive," he said.

After being accepted into the corps, Kroll served from 2011 to 2013 at a rural school in the Mississippi Delta. Though challenging, Kroll said, it was an eye-opening experience for him, and it propelled him to come back to UGA to get his master's degree from the College of Education. He completed his Master of Arts in Teaching this May.

"I really, really enjoyed connecting with people on a different level and teaching them something they didn't know before," he said. "I plan on working with young people for as long as I can, and a lot of that came from this experience."

Kroll now teaches geometry at Centennial High School in Roswell and plans to eventually work in education administration.
