Swiss Exchange Students Arrive at CHS

 

The World Languages Department is happy to announce the arrival of the Swiss Exchange Students from Sion, Switzerland. We waited anxiously at the airport for their arrival, and were thrilled when they had finally made it to Atlanta! They will be with their American partners until April 1^st. Please welcome them to Centennial during their visit!

CHS Artists Contribute to NASA

 

 

Ms. Turner's art students were quick to jump on board last month when NASA invited artists to send their artwork on a journey aboard NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft.  OSIRIS-REx is scheduled to launch in September and travel to the asteroid Bennu.  This will be the first U.S. mission to collect a sample of an asteroid and return it to Earth for study.

 

The #WeTheExplorers campaign invited the public to take part in this mission by expressing, through art, how the mission's spirit of exploration is reflected in their own lives.  Submitted works of art will be saved on a chip on the spacecraft.

 

"The development of the spacecraft and instruments has been a hugely creative process, where ultimately the canvas is the machined metal and composites preparing to launch in September," said Jason Dworkin, OSIRIS-REx project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.  "It is fitting that this endeavor can inspire the public to express their creativity to be carried by OSIRIS-Rex into space."

 

Contributing Centennial artists took the opportunity to connect art and science as they learned about the details of the mission and the orbiting asteroid Bennu.  The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launches in 2016, rendezvous with asteroid (101955) Bennu in 2018, and returns its sample to Earth in 2023.

Davis' Photo Selected for Publication

and NYC Gallery Show 

 

 

 

 

 

JROTC Cadet Mackenzy Davis (pictured above in a CHS JROTC photo), along with other female cadets (pictured in the group photo above), were professionally photographed (not shown) by Kate Parker, a professional photographer who is currently photographing strong girls for possible inclusion in her new book, "Strong is the New Pretty." Mackenzy's photo was selected to appear in Parker's New York City gallery show last week. The photograph of Mackenzie selected for inclusion cannot be shown yet, since it is now the property of Parker.  Below is the press release for Parker's NYC gallery showing.

 

"Special K is launching the “Nourish Your Next” project to recognize and celebrate get-after-it, bring-it-on, ready-for-what’s next women, and nourish what they have their sights set on next. Throughout the year, Special K will be on the lookout for women who are rocking it, and celebrating their strength in ways big and small.

To kick things off, Special K is elevating the story of a woman worthy of recognition, “Strong is the New Pretty” photographer Kate T. Parker. What started as a personal photography project for the mother to two young daughters is now a mission to combat the messages often sent to women and girls by showing that true beauty is not in a hairstyle, outfit or body type, but in being yourself 100%.

Inspired by her mission, Special K is helping Parker reach a new audience with her message, starting with her first-ever New York City photography exhibit where she’ll showcase that strong is indeed the new pretty and unveil #whatsnext – a “Strong is the New Pretty” book and charity. Proceeds from the sale of select images will also help Parker further her mission to nourish future generations of strong women through her charity."

 

Bray Defeats College Fencers

 

 

Congratulations to Nick Bray (second from the left)for taking the Bronze at the Yellow Jacket Open Fencing Tournament at Georgia Tech.  Bray overcame an initial seeding of 59 in the 60 person field, defeating fencers from Georgia Tech and Clemson on his way to the semifinals.  In the semis, Nick lost a tough 14-12 decision to the number one seed and eventual champion from the University of Florida. 

AP Bio Students Successfully Engineer

Jellyfish Gene

Mr. Kuhn’s AP Biology students have had another year of success engineering the jellyfish gene for bioluminescence into E. coli.

 

 

Orchestra Members Perform

for Music Conference

 

 

 

 

Congratulations to members of the Centennial High School Orchestra who performed as part of the keynote address for the National Foundation for Music Education Research Conference in at the Westin Hotel in downtown Atlanta. It was an honor to perform for over 300 music researchers from across the country! Performers- Olivia Chapman, Sarah Leftwich, Jason Li, Darcy Malec, Sarah Maitland, Kyle Qian, David Wen and Caroline Wittschen.
