Don’t Text While Driving Message Rings True

Last week during lunch, AT&T offered a hands-on demonstration of the dangers of texting while driving to students and faculty who thought they could prove their competence behind the wheel. Pictured above is our own Officer Willis attempting, unsuccessfully, to text while driving.

VETERANS LEAD CHS FENCERS TO
THIRD PLACE FINISH

The Centennial Fencing team continued their strong season with an outstanding showing at the Dunwoody High School tournament over the weekend.

The upperclassmen led the way in the men’s competition, as all 5 juniors and seniors advanced to the direct elimination rounds.   Peter Wolff was a standout, dominating in his pool competition and storming his way to an 8th place finish.  Wolff, along with teammates Kenneth Blackwell (12th), Simon Miller (14th) and Joshua Yao (16th)  scored valuable points for the Knights with impressive victories in the direct elimination rounds.    Junior Jackson Barnes rounded out the strong veteran showing by advancing to the second round of direct elimination.

The freshmen boys continue to impress.   Centennial fencers Nick Bray (25th), Daniel Sandfelder (35th) and Duncan Hemauer (38th) finished as the top 3 ninth grade competitors in the 70 man field.   Fellow ninth grade Knights Dean Bowler, Joseph Dorfman, Roman Cheek and Chason Thompson showed great promise in their first varsity tournament action.

On the women’s squad, Maggie Fritts (22nd) made an amazing debut in Varsity competition.  With no previous tournament experience, Fritts advanced easily through the pools and into the direct elimination rounds.    Olivia and Simone Katz gained valuable experience with their strong efforts on Saturday.

The Knights are coached by Fencing Master Gene Gettler.   If you are interested in joining the team, please attend an afterschool practice on Wednesdays in the cafeteria.   More fencing information can be found at http://chsfencingclub.webs.com/ .

Centennial Fencers Excel in First Tournament

The Centennial Fencing Team competed today in a special tournament for novice fencers at Cambridge HS.  The Knights faced other programs in the Georgia High School Fencing League, a league comprised of 14 schools in the greater Atlanta area.

The Knights novice women were represented by sophomore Karla Chavez and freshmen Olivia and Simone Katz.   Olivia Katz nearly cracked the top ten finishers, while Chavez and Simone Katz scored impressive wins in their preliminary round.

The Knights men’s team was led by freshmen Daniel Sandfelder and Joseph Dorfman.   Both placed in the top 20 in a 53 fencer field.  Sandfelder led all fencers after the preliminary rounds and pulled out a thrilling 15-14 victory in his first direct elimination (DE) bout before falling in a nail biter in the following round.  Other first time freshmen competitors included Dean Bowler, Roman Cheek, and Chason Thompson.  All fenced well in the preliminary rounds but were eliminated in their first direct elimination (DE) bouts.

The Knights are coached by Fencing Master Gene Gettler.  Coach Gettler was extremely pleased with the performance of his novice fencers, as some entered the tournament with less than a month of experience.

Varsity fencers Kenneth Blackwell (captain), Peter Wolff (captain),  Jackson Barnes, Joshua Yao and Nick Bray were present to provide guidance and support for their teammates.

CHS fencers next compete at Dunwoody High School this Saturday, September 27.  The team is still accepting newcomers.  Fencing is an exciting sport, come give it a try!  The team practices Mondays and Wednesdays after school.
