Centennial Student Artists Win at GANF

The Georgia National Fair Student Art Contest has just finished and the works have been judged and returned.  In September, students submitted works by grade levels and in categories based on what material was used to create the work of art.  Just to show at the Georgia National Fair is a big accomplishment, because only about 10% , or 1000, of the submitted works are actually shown from the different grade levels and categories.  We had 25 works submitted: 17 of them placed in the show and several works were awarded 1st through 3rd place.  This showing is a huge accomplishment for our student artists!  The works are on display near the front office.

Freshman Centennial Fencers Stepping Up

The CHS fencers competed last week in a nine-school meet at Milton High School.  Coach Gettler is extremely pleased with the progress of the teams 9th graders, who make up more than half of our roster.  Freshmen Nick Bray (14th out of 77 men) and Maggie Fritz (15th out 42 women) earned points and qualified for the Individual Championships by placing in the top 16.  Other 9th graders with multiple victories include Simone Katz, Duncan Hemauer, Daniel Sandfelder, Joseph Dorfman, and Dean Bowler.  Their quick progress indicates that Centennial will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

The Men’s team was led by junior Simon Miller, who placed 9th (his best finish ever) after narrowly losing 15-14 to get in to the top 8.  Close behind was  captain Kenneth Blackwell at 12th, Bray at 14th,  captain Peter Wolff 23rd , and freshman Duncan Hemauer 31st.

In the Women’s event, Fritz won 4 preliminary bouts and finished 14th.  Sophomore newcomer Karla Chavez won 3 bouts and finished 25th, followed by Simone Katz at 29th.

Centennial will host the next tournament November 1st.  This will be a great opportunity to see fencing action first-hand and cheer on the Knights!

Business and Technology Students Begin
Semester Book Talks

Introduction to Business and Technology students have just completed their first book talk of the semester.  Students read "Eat That Frog" by Brian Tracy to help them prepare to become better managers and employers.  They were able to understand the importance of utilizing a system of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly planning.  Students were able to recognize that the “frog” to be eaten (completed) first is the most important task to be achieved.  Students shared the most significant points made in the book through presentations and discussion.  Finally, students were served frog shaped cupcakes and gummy frogs.  The students can truly say that they did learn to "Eat That Frog"!

Senior Service Day 2014

While 9th, 10th, and 11th graders take the PSAT, Centennial seniors offer their service in a variety of locations in our community. The seniors (plus Mr. Price and Mr. Rigsbey)in these pictures are working at Safe House in downtown Atlanta.

Safe House has reported that the Atlanta Falcons, who served the pancake breakfast yesterday, didn't have ANYTHING on our Centennial seniors today! The Falcons used ready-made Bisquick; Mr. Price and his group of students whipped up homemade batter and cooked the pancakes on bacon grease! The students walked out to Centennial Olympic Park to speak to the homeless, play chess with those who were willing, and invite many of them for breakfast.

Today's guest speaker, Markeith Wood, is the parent of a former Centennial graduate, Malik Wood. Mr. Wood has been a mentor for 19 years and is the founder of storiboardnation.com, an online social network that provides students with the opportunity to connect with mentors around the world in a cool space.
