Freshman Centennial Fencers Stepping Up

The CHS fencers competed last week in a nine-school meet at Milton High School.  Coach Gettler is extremely pleased with the progress of the teams 9th graders, who make up more than half of our roster.  Freshmen Nick Bray (14th out of 77 men) and Maggie Fritz (15th out 42 women) earned points and qualified for the Individual Championships by placing in the top 16.  Other 9th graders with multiple victories include Simone Katz, Duncan Hemauer, Daniel Sandfelder, Joseph Dorfman, and Dean Bowler.  Their quick progress indicates that Centennial will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

The Men’s team was led by junior Simon Miller, who placed 9th (his best finish ever) after narrowly losing 15-14 to get in to the top 8.  Close behind was  captain Kenneth Blackwell at 12th, Bray at 14th,  captain Peter Wolff 23rd , and freshman Duncan Hemauer 31st.

In the Women’s event, Fritz won 4 preliminary bouts and finished 14th.  Sophomore newcomer Karla Chavez won 3 bouts and finished 25th, followed by Simone Katz at 29th.

Centennial will host the next tournament November 1st.  This will be a great opportunity to see fencing action first-hand and cheer on the Knights!
