Fencing Kicks Off New Year with Wins

The Centennial Fencing Team began the new year with excellent performances at the January Lassiter High School meet.   One of the highlights was junior Holly Nichols (pictured right)making her first top-8 placement, finishing 7th overall out of 50 fencers.  Senior Captain Dorothy  Cannella (pictured left)continued to show she is one of the most dominating fencers in the league, placing 2nd while still nursing an ankle injury.
The entire men’s squad fenced superbly in the preliminary round of 5 touch bouts (called pools), with a collective record of 23 victories against 12 losses.  They faltered in the Direct Elimination Round of 15 touch bouts.  Junior Captain Kenneth Blackwell finished 14th overall followed by senior Captain Nick Summers at 19th and junior Peter Wolff at 21st out of a field of 76 competitors.
The Fencing team has one more regular season meet at Milton HS Feb. 1st, followed by the Individual Championships at Northview HS Feb 22nd and the Team Championships at Pope HS March 1st.
